What Is Economic Census?

Economic Census is a full count of all "business establishments" and "non-profit organizations" in Malaysia. The census is conducted every five years. The first Economic Census was conducted in 2001 for the reference year 2000. 

The Department of Statistics Malaysia will conduct the 2023 Economic Census for the reference year 2022. This census is conducted under the Statistics Act 1965 (Revised 1989). Section 5 of this act requires any establishment operating in Malaysia to provide actual or best estimate information to the Department of Statistics Malaysia.

When is the Economic Census conducted?

Data collection operation: April 1, until 30 September 2023

Who will be involved in the Economic Census?

The Economic Census 2023 covers all economic sectors in Malaysia, including agriculture; mining and quarrying; manufacturing; construction; and services (except the government sector, in which the data are obtained from administrative records).

Why respond to this census?

1.    To evaluate the achievements of the Twelfth Malaysia Plan (12MP); 
2.    Identifying the sources of new economic growth; 
3.    Generating new economic statistics; 
4.    Generating key statistics down to the district level; 
5.    Enhancing the capacity of national big data statistics; 
6.    Obtaining new benchmark.
